Ayrshire is situated in the South West of Scotland and has a rich history which includes the birthplace of the world renowned poet Robert Burns whose 250 birthday will be celebrated worldwide in 2009 the year of the Homecoming.

As part of our service to customers both old and new we thought that a regular updated page on Ayrshire, its people and history would be of interest. It will also give us the opportunity to let you know about innovative products such as Clinnell health wipes and other special offers.

 

Did you know that the pneumatic tyre, penicillin and gas turbines were Ayrshire inventions or that another famous son was William Wallace [ Braveheart ]. It is also the home of Johnny Walker`s whisky and the birthplace of the "Open" golf championship at Prestwick.

 

It has many golf courses including Turnberry and Royal Troon and is accessable by road, rail, sea and air via Prestwick Airport. 

 

Latest news : Congratulations to George Burley of Cumnock on becoming the new Scotland Football Manager. Prince Charles for supporting the buying of Dumfries House Estate to the tune of £22 million pounds. The house which has a wealth of treasures including Chippendale furniture will be opened to the public in 2008 and future plans include a new eco-village called Knockroon. This is based on the successful Poundbury town in Dorset and will have a massive impact in the regeneration of East Ayrshire. The Antique Roadshow will also be coming to Dumfries House in July 2008. 

 

Other well known people with strong Ayrshire connections include : Bill Shankly of Liverpool F.C. who was born in Glenbuck just outside the village of Muirkirk and played for the famous "Glenbuck Cherrypickers". Keir Hardie the founder of the Labour party spent most of his life in Cumnock and James Boswell of Dr Samuel Johnson fame stayed in Auchinleck. Murdoch who invented the Gas Lamp was from Lugar.

 

Robert the Bruce fought battles in Ayrshire and  George D Brown who wrote the famous novel " The House with the Green Shutters " was born in Ochiltree. Lorraine McIntosh of Deacon Blue & River City fame is a Cumnock lassie.

 

The island of Ailsa Craig which is a bird sanctuary was also famous for its rock used to manufacture Mauchline curling stones. The Waverley Paddle Steamer offers weekly excursions around the island in summer from Largs, Ayr and Girvan. Cumbrae famous for its cycle lane around the island has a regular ferry service from Largs as well as weekly visits by the Waverley in summer. The largest island Arran [ Little Scotland ]with its scenic mountains has a regular ferry service from Ardrossan as well as being visited by the Waverley weekly in summer.
